About Hebrew Type

Hi, I’m Enon Avital.

This is my space for adventures in Hebrew typography. My Hebrew type journey began as a personal challenge, while searching to improve my creative output. During my search I realized that inspiration for Latin letters could easily be found, and I decided that my next experiment must be one with little reference, where I’d be challenged piece after piece to be as self-referential as possible.

One day it hit me: Hebrew letters don’t lend themselves to the hooks and ligatures commonplace in Latin letter designs. Flourishes are more difficult to integrate, and the rigid shapes of Hebrew type would challenge me a heck of a lot more. And so my #HebrewType journey began, and continues in both this space and my Instagram.

כאן ניתן לעקוב אחרי הרפתקאותיי בטיפוגרפיה עברית. המסע שלי התחיל בתור אתגר, תוך כדי חיפוש למשהוא שישפר את התפוקה היצירתית שלי. במהלך החיפוש הבחנתי שהשראה מאותיות לטיניות מצויה בהמוניה ברחבי האינטרנט, ומייד החלטתי שההרפתקה הבאה שלי חייבת להיות ללא הפניה מאחרים, בה כל איור נוצר מנקודת מבט אישית.

יום אחד הציץ לו רעיון: אותיות האלף בית לא משאילות את צורתן הנוקשה לסלסולים וחיבורים כפי שנעשה בעיצובי אות לטיניים. יותר קשה ליצור איות עברי שהוא לא קליגרפי ובסגנון מודרני, ואתגר היצירה בעברית תהיה הרבה יותר מעניינת בעבורי. וכך התחיל מסע ה #HebrewType עם כמה איורים משיר השירים, וממשיך כאן ובאיסטגרם.
